Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (July 15, 2014) – Derek Hagar claimed his first career USCS Speedweek title last weekend following a six-week delay.
Hagar, who won the first three Speedweek races in late May, finished eighth in the postponed Speedweek finale at Riverside International Speedway on Saturday to garner the crown.
“It’s something good to put out there and it paid a little bit of money, which always helps,” he said.
Although his 18th top 10 of the season was enough to secure the title, the race was anything but fun for Hagar.
“We had a bad draw and the race track was terrible,” he said. “There wasn’t a lot of passing all night.”
Hagar advanced from sixth to fourth place in his heat race, which lined him up on the outside of the seventh row for the 30-lap main event.
“The track was real heavy and then everybody was real tight,” he said. “I had my hands full. I had my power steering go out around Lap 5.”
Hagar picked up a half-dozen positions during the rough main event to place eighth.
“We had to take last weekend with a grain of salt because the track was so bad,” he said. “That weekend is behind us and now I’ve got to focus on Knoxville.”
Hagar is taking this weekend off before he will tackle Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on July 26. He will then compete during the 360 Knoxville Nationals the following week before driving for Pete Grove in the 54th annual FVP Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s General Stores Aug. 6-9.
