Inside Line Promotions – COLUMBUS, Miss. (June 2, 2015) – Derek Hagar has found his mojo after registering his second straight podium finish last Friday at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
“We were fast from the time we unloaded and we’re always pretty quick at Magnolia,” he said. “It’s probably one of my favorite tracks to go to. It’s just fun to run around.”
That was evident from the start of the night as Hagar won both the dash and his heat race at the USCS Speedweek event.
“I think we were seven tenths faster than anyone in the dash,” he said. “It was right around the top. I was riding against the fence. It was the same way in the heat race. I took the lead coming off turn four on Lap 1 and that gave us high points.”
Hagar, who charged from fifth to claim the heat race, started on the pole of the 30-lap main event after the zero was drawn as the inversion. He wasted no time jumping to the top groove.
“I went to the top where I’d been running all night,” he said. “I could look to the left and see (Tim Crawley) on the bottom, but my momentum kept me in front. He was getting better and better. The top went away as the feature went on. About Lap 6 Crawley got by us. It was one of those deals when you’re out front you don’t know where the fastest line is until you get passed. I got back to him, but we caught lapped traffic at the wrong place whenever we’d get back to him. We had a fast car. We just couldn’t get back by him and seal the deal.”
Hagar ended with a runner-up result, which marked his third top five of the season. It also kept him in the points lead of the USCS Speedweek, which had Thursday’s event rained out at Talladega Short Track in Talladega, Ala., and Saturday’s postponed at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark.
“We had a fast car all night and that’s something we really needed,” he said. “We’ve come out with a win and a top two the last week. It’s a good confidence boost for our team and me as well.”
Hagar is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Riverside International Speedway for the Hooker Hood Classic.
