Inside Line Promotions – PHENIX CITY, Ala. (June 21, 2016) – Derek Hagar has found a home away from home in the Winner’s Circle at East Alabama Motor Speedway.
Hagar, who scored his first career sprint car win at the track in 2007, claimed his fifth career victory at the oval last Saturday during the 27-lap Randy Helton Memorial with the USCS Series.
“It’s one of those race tracks that a lot of people don’t run the top of,” he said. “It suits my style. I like running the top. You have to be patient on a track like that and try not to use your tires up and make the right moves.”
Hagar did just that as he advanced from third to second place in the dash and from seventh to second place in a heat race. That made him the high-points driver. Hagar started the main event on the outside of the second row following a four-car inversion.
“I rode in third for the early part of the race and passed Terry Gray for second around Lap 7,” he said. “A few laps later I had a good run around the top in turns one and two. The leader kept going to the middle and I drove around him going down the back straightaway. We had good, clean air and finally got the balance of the car right. It was pretty smooth racing after that.”
Hagar took the lead on Lap 11 and he cruised to his 40th career USCS victory. It was his ninth win of the year and fourth with the USCS this season. It also keeps Hagar’s podium streak alive with the series. He hasn’t finished outside the top three during any of his nine USCS races this year.
Friday’s opening round at East Alabama Motor Speedway rained out.
Hagar will return to action this Friday at Moulton Speedway in Moulton, Ala., and Saturday at Fort Payne Speedway in Fort Payne, Ala., with the ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints.
