Inside Line Promotions – EASTABOGA, Ala. (June 6, 2017) – Marshall Skinner is in the hunt for a USCS Series Speedweek championship thanks to a pair of victories.
Skinner captured Speedweek wins on May 26 at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, Miss., and last Thursday at Talladega Short Track to book end the four completed Speedweek races.
“We did really well with it being just me and my wife,” he said. “I drive the truck, I wash the cars, I do everything. It’s a big boost for me since I’m a one-man operation trying to do it on a shoestring budget.”
Speedweek began with Skinner advancing from fourth to third place in the dash at Hattiesburg Speedway. He then won a heat race after starting on the outside front row before maneuvering from fourth to win his first career race at the track.
“Me and Derek (Hagar) were battling for the lead when traffic crashed in front of us,” he said. “Derek got caught up in it and I got a piece of it, too. Luckily I was able to keep going and we held the lead for the rest of the race.”
Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., hosted Speedweek Round 2 on May 27. Skinner placed fifth in the dash and ended fourth in a heat race after being involved in a crash. He capped the night by charging from 15th to a sixth-place result in the main event.
The third round of Speedweek competition was a week ago Monday at Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, Tenn., where Skinner advanced from third to second place in a heat race before he closed the night fourth in the main event.
Skinner returned to Victory Lane on Thursday at Talladega Short Track, where he ended fifth in the dash, charged from seventh to third place in a heat race and used a mid-race pass on Tim Crawley to secure the win in the main event.
“That was a Snow White story,” Skinner said. “I actually broke down on the way to the track. My uncle brought me his truck to use and we pulled my truck out of the way. I missed hot laps and Derek put heat in my engine while I got changed at the track. The dash was my first time on the track and I basically used that as hot laps to figure out a setup.
“I had a great car in the feature and I drove by Crawley on a restart on the 17th lap. I didn’t even think I was going to get to the track let alone win.”
The victory was Skinner’s first at the oval.
Last Friday’s Speedweek event at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., was cancelled because of rain and Saturday’s show at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., was postponed to June 22 because of inclement weather. Skinner will head into that Speedweek finale ranked second in the standings.
He will take this weekend off before resuming competition on June 17 at Riverside International Speedway for the Hooker Hood Classic.
