Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (Oct. 24, 2017) – A late-race flat tire and suspension damage forced Marshall Skinner out of the second USCS Fall Nationals A Main while he was leading on Saturday night at Riverside International Speedway.

Skinner took the green from the second starting spot in the second of two, 25-lap features with the second feature lined up as an inversion of the finish from the first A Main. He quickly took the lead and led by over a straightaway when misfortune struck on Lap 5.

“I was trying to lap a car that had been running the same line as me at the top of the track,” he said. “When I went to the bottom to pass him, he went to the bottom, too, and I flat ran over him. My car bicycled and he spun out and caused a caution.”

Skinner, who kept going, noticed that all was not well with his car when the race resumed.

“When we got going again my car was vibrating really bad,” he said. “I found out later that the right front shock mount had broken and it eventually broke the stop.”

Skinner maintained the lead until Lap 19 when more issues arose.

“I went into turn one and the torsion bar came out against the tire and it wouldn’t turn left,” he said. “I brushed the wall and flattened the tire. I led for another lap with a flat right front and no steering before I finally had to stop.
“It is what it is. I’d rather be lucky than good any day of the week. But I just can’t buy any luck right now.”

The DNF capped the weekend, which began on Friday at Riverside International Speedway. He charged from ninth to fourth place in his heat race and finished second in the feature after starting fourth.

“The track on Friday was really heavy and hammer down,” he said. “I think I was able to move forward a bit because I was able to free my car up. Most everybody else was too tight. I was able to get by some of them when their cars were pushing up the track.”

Saturday night saw track conditions that were completely different from Friday.
“Saturday’s track was the exact opposite from Friday,” he said. “I actually killed a left rear tire in hot laps because the track was so dry.”

Skinner was able to advance one position from his fifth-place starting spot in his heat race, placing him on the front row of the B Main. He transferred through the consolation race with a runner-up result to start 16th in the evening’s first A Main, which he finished 15th.

“It was hard to do any passing in that first feature because everyone was following each other around the bottom,” he said. “They moved the tractor tires further out onto the track and took away that groove for the second feature. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up working out for us.”

Skinner will close out his 2017 racing season this Saturday at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala., with the USCS Series.
