Hanks Highlights Weekend With Fourth-Place Finish in Mississippi

Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (June 5, 2018) – Brandon Hanks joined the final two nights of the USCS Series Speedweek last weekend.

His competition began on Friday at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., with a runner-up result in a heat race.

“Friday night was a good night,” he said. “We weren’t as good as Tony (Stewart) in the heat race. Once he got clean air he was pretty well gone.”

The heat race performance lined Hanks up on the outside of the fifth row for the A Main.

“The car was good,” he said. “I had some good battles and the track was real slick. You had a little grip on the wall or you could creep around the bottom. It was an ideal race track. It was a lot of fun. We drove from 10th to fourth without any cautions. I’d have liked to get a caution to get behind Tony, Sammy (Swindell) and (Derek) Hagar to at least see how we compared to them, but we didn’t get that chance.”

The fourth-place finish marked his fourth top five of the season.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday at Riverside International Speedway, where Hanks placed sixth in the dash before he started a heat race last.

“I was too tight,” he said. “We couldn’t get our car freed up enough. When the track is hooked up and narrow everybody is fast. In the heat race I was behind three cars that I felt faster than, but there was nowhere to go. It was like a moving roadblock. We had a caution about four laps in. After restarting, when I went it to turn one I stayed in the gas and I drove all four wheels above the good stuff. It stuck and went around there. The next thing I know I was fourth. We came around the finish line and the caution came out as I went into turn one. I wasn’t worried because we made a full lap. However, they went back a lap and a half to put me back behind those guys. Then they knew what I was going to do and took up the track. I tried to do the same thing and a guy acted like he was going to the bottom and he slid up. When he did that I had to get off the gas. I hooked a rut and turned over.”

The night ended early for Hanks after the heat race misfortune.

“That was a frustrating way to end the weekend,” he said. “I shouldn’t have even been in that position, but that’s how racing plays out sometimes. We’ll just try again the next race we go to.”
