Inside Line Promotions – SENOIA, Ga. (Sept. 11, 2018) – Jordon Mallett added to his string of consecutive podium runs last Saturday when he recorded a runner-up finish at Senoia Raceway.
The native of Greenbrier, Ark., has now been on the podium in five consecutive USCS Series races as he chases his second straight series championship.
The event at Senoia Speedway was a makeup for a race that was rained out in August. Mallett began the evening with a third-place finish in the dash. In the second heat race, the 26-year-old charged from the seventh starting spot to finish second.
“We unloaded another fast race car,” he said. “We made a few minor adjustments after the dash and was able to have a really good car for the heat race. That set us up really well for the feature. Sometimes the heat race is where you have to make it happen and we were able to do that.”
Mallett started on the pole for the 30-lap main event and quickly began to open a sizeable lead. By the halfway point, he had about a half-track advantage. On a subsequent restart, he moved to the top of the track for a few laps. Following another caution, he moved back down to the bottom of the 3/8-mile oval. With about 10 laps to go, the track took rubber and Mallett was passed on the outside for the lead. He quickly moved to the top and stayed there for the rest of the race, crossing the finish line second.
“I was just minding my own business, running the bottom and hitting my marks,” he noted. “That place is so slick that you have to be very patient with the car to make it do what you want. Being the leader is a good thing and a bad thing. Second place can have its advantages because they can move around a little bit and find different spots on the track to run.
“You are a sitting duck out front and you don’t know what anyone behind you is doing and if they found the rubber. They were in the right spot at the right time. If that caution wouldn’t have come out, no one would have had anything for us. Things happen and in a situation like that there’s not much you can do.”
This weekend Mallett heads to the Carolinas for a pair of USCS races. First up is a visit to Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, N.C., on Friday followed by a stop at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C., on Saturday.
“We’ll go through everything like normal this week in the shop,” he said. “We plan to unload another fast hot rod come Friday and Saturday night. Hopefully we can do our jobs right and win a couple of more. I always like running at Carolina (Speedway) because that is where I won my first race.”
