Inside Line Promotions – CLEWISTON, Fla. (Feb. 11, 2020) – Derek Hagar nearly powered to a pair of top-five finishes during his season-opening doubleheader last weekend.
Hagar and car owner Terry Witherspoon made a late decision to tackle the USCS Series National event at Hendry County Motorsports Park, marking Hagar’s first time driving for the team since 2018.
“We changed some stuff at the shop and it paid off,” he said. “We had the car underneath us and it was something I felt like I didn’t have when we teamed up a couple of years ago. Everything was great.”
Hagar maneuvered from fourth to win a heat race on Friday. The feature inversion lined him up on the outside of the third row, but he worked into a podium position as the white flag came out.
“We were battling for second and I got underneath Danny Smith,” he said. “I barely clipped an infield tire coming off turn four.”
Hagar lost a position, but was able to save the car and hold on for a fourth-place result.
The team showed similar speed on Saturday. Hagar placed second in the dash and he advanced from seventh to fifth in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the main event.
“The car handled good once again,” he said. “We got up to fourth and were battling for third when a mechanical problem ended our night early with five or six laps to go.”
Hagar was credited with a 19th-place finish.
“That was out of our hands,” he said. “I feel like we’ve made a big improvement and I’m really looking forward to this weekend.”
Hagar will return to a Witherspoon entry this Thursday through Saturday at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Fla., during the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360s. It marks the third time in the last four years the duo has competed at the event.
