Wilson Wrangles Pair of Third-Place Finishes During USCS Doubleheader in Florida

Inside Line Promotions – MILTON, Fla. (May 19, 2020) – Greg Wilson wasn’t hampered by the lengthy pause in his season because of COVID-19.

Wilson and his Hercules Tires, DNC Hydraulics, Ohio Logistics and Gear Off Road backed team returned to action after two months away from the track last weekend by tackling a USCS Series doubleheader at Southern Raceway. The weekend yielded a pair of third-place finishes to give Wilson five podiums in his last seven races.

“We had a fun weekend,” he said. “As much as I didn’t want to be off from racing for two months, with as much as I’ve raced the last few years I think the break did me some good because it made me appreciate how lucky I am and how much I love to do what I do. We went and had fun. And some of the things where I felt we were taking steps in the right direction, I think it showed we’re continuing that way.”

Both nights mirrored each other in a sense with a fifth-place result in the dash providing extra laps prior to heat race competition. Wilson capitalized by hustling from eighth to third place in a heat race on Friday and from seventh to third place in a heat race on Saturday.

“The cool part about the dash is it’s another hot lap session,” he said. “There’s things you want to try. Sometimes testing is tough because you have no other cars to gauge it off. When you’re in the dash and you know it’s a glorified hot lap session we can try some things. Some of it helped. We did a little more the first night. The second night it actually hurt us so we changed it back for the heat race.”

Wilson lined up on the outside of the front row for the A Main on Friday.

“It was real fun,” he said. “They had the race track real good. You could move around. We ran second for quite a while. I was pacing myself and trying not to use up my tires. I knew when we’d get to traffic we’d be okay. We got slid for third, but we were in traffic so I was patient. We fell to fourth and then there were four of us racing hard. I got to second and just about had the lead, but I clipped the infield tire and pulled a big wheelie and lost a bunch of ground. We raced pretty hard the rest of the way. We had a great race with Dale Howard. We had a clean, fun race and ended up third.”

Wilson had a slightly deeper starting position – fifth – in Saturday’s feature, but the result ended the same.

“We had a great start to the race, but I felt like some of the things we’ve been messing with we went too far,” he said. “Part of that being we were trying to be as good as Mark (Smith). We went a little too far. Throughout the race I was really struggling to hang on to where we finished. The track started taking rubber and got abrasive so the cars got stuck. We were extremely tight. I was having a hard time picking my lines. We were competitive enough to run in the top three again so as much as I wanted to be two spots better on the podium, it was a consistent weekend.”

Wilson plans on racing this Friday and Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo., with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. He might also venture to Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, on Thursday depending on the weather.
