Inside Line Promotions – MILTON, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2020) – The season finale was a success for Derek Hagar, who ventured to Florida to race with the USCS Series last weekend.
Hagar posted a podium on Friday before earning the Hard Charger Award on Saturday during a doubleheader at Southern Raceway.
The weekend began on Friday with Hagar hustling from fifth to second place in a heat race. The feature inversion lined him up on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“On Friday night we had some good passing points for our heat race,” he said. “The guy in third spun out so that put us fourth on the restart for the feature. We jumped up to second pretty quick. Every time we’d get a run on the leader the caution would come out. Every time I’d get my nose underneath him or I was close enough to make a move a caution would come out. With a few laps to go I hit a hole in turn one and bounced it and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. got by me. We ended up running third. It’s one thing to get to them and it’s another to pass them.”
Hagar’s third-place outing was his 17th top five of the year.
The event concluded on Saturday with Hagar finishing where he started in both the dash – second – and a heat race – fifth. That relegated him to the B Main, which he won from the fourth starting position to transfer into the main event.
“We were in the third row of the most stacked heat race,” he said. “We didn’t get any passing points so that put us in the second row of the B Main. We won it and started 15th in the feature. We had a fast car. It’s just one of those tracks where it’s tough to pass. We wasted a lot of laps trying to pass cars instead of making work of them early. I’d have to move around to make a run. If you didn’t get that run you wasted that lap. We worked our way to eighth and were pleased with it.”
Hagar continued to march forward throughout the feature, rallying from 15th to eighth. He was honored as the Hard Charger Award winner for passing the most cars.
“It was a good weekend and we brought the car home in one piece,” he said. “Now we’ll start stripping it down to prepare for the 2021 season.”
