Inside Line Promotions – LOXLEY, Ala. (March 23, 2021) – Greg Wilson posted a pair of runner-up results last weekend during the USCS Gulf Coast Shootout.
Wilson led his Hercules Tires, Ohio Logistics and DNC Hydraulics sponsored team forward every time it hit the track during the USCS Series doubleheader at Deep South Speedway, where he made his debut. Wilson now has four top fives in his first 10 races of the season.
“Over the winter we tried to keep things simplified and get back to a better baseline to where we are consistent and that is showing,” he said. “We were fortunate the last few nights that we’ve drawn well and we’re running good so that sets you up for a decent starting spot in the feature.”
Racing began on Friday with Wilson winning his heat race after lining up on the outside of the front row. It was his third heat win of the season. The feature inversion lined Wilson up on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“We had a really good car,” he said. “We got a good start and into fourth right away. We ran a bit and got by Mark (Smith) to third. We ran some more laps and got into traffic. We got around Max (Stambaugh) for second. Then we ran down Ricky (Stenhouse Jr.) and got to him. The caution came out with six or seven laps to go. He was just better than us in the clear and we probably used our tires up getting to him. He was using his too so that’s not really an excuse. We could hang with him, but there’s a difference between hanging with someone and getting around them.”
Wilson’s second-place finish was his third podium of the season.
Second was a common number on Saturday as Wilson finished in that position each time he hit the track. He hustled from fourth to second in the dash and a heat race, and he advanced from third to second in the A Main.
“We got to second right away,” he said. “Jordon Mallett made absolutely no mistakes. We were within a car length or two most of the race. With the way the track ended up being toward the end of the race he needed to make a mistake and he just didn’t make any. He did a great job.”
Wilson will take this weekend off before kicking off the FloRacing All Star Circuit of Champions points season on April 2-3 at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio.
“The All Star deal at Attica is going to be really tough,” he said. “It’s the first big race of the year so you know they’ll get a pile of cars. A lot of it depends on where you’ll end up in a heat race and how you’ll time in in your heat race. We usually go pretty good at Attica. If we can get in the race, right now we have as good of a shot as any.”
